These are my first audiophile headphones. I was happy using a Sennheiser HD280Pro for many many years, but those are completely worn and dismantled, so i thought I’d take an approach with a hi-fi headphone.And yes, they are driven sufficiently with the i basso d10 cobra, which has a powerful amp and dac built in.They just don’t have the engaging/musical presence to them. I really wanted to like them, but for electronic, techno, pop, and rock, they just didn’t do anything for me. How can anyone listen to music with that low of bass that these headphones have? Not to mention that if a recording is bright, there’s going to be tons of harsh sounding treble spikes that are just uncomfortable to listen to. And if a recording isn’t bright, you better make sure it’s perfectly mastered and doesn’t have an ounce of an error or else you’re going to be really disappointed with what you hear.The comfort was extremely top notch however. First off, these aren’t nearly as hard to drive as you’d assume from their impedance. I was able to get decent volume out of everything I connected it to form a proper desktop amp, to straight out of the onboard sound from my netbook. They are of course, not being driven properly from something without an adequate voltage swing, but neither are they useless without a beefy amp.On to the meat of the review. “How do they sound,” I hear you asking. In one word, bright, or in two, very bright. Their metaphorical albedo is off the charts. The highs are quite pronounced, but in a very smooth and simultaneously crisp manner. Hardly peaky at all, without transient spikes leaving you constantly fiddling with the volume. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the bass is simply amazing for an open headphone. I paid $60 for these at Best Buy. I should have taken the hint the first time, when I had to return them after one day because the left earphone stopped working. But I persisted and got a new pair of X1s which worked OK for about 5 months. Then, the microphone stopped working. Bottom line – it’s nice to be able to hear the game sound through the headset, and the X1 does a decent job of that, but the reliability is not good enough, especially for the price point. You can get a Hong Kong copy of these on eBay for about $8 shipped. At that price, the X1’s shortcomings would be forgivable.
